Healthcare (hospitals, nursing, or long-term care) facilities usually have very strict and delicate infection control protocols that take place every single day. These protocols are designed to decrease the risk and spread of bacteria and viruses, which may include anything from washing hands to using different baskets for soiled and clean linen, to having a barrier-type pass-through washing system to separate the soiled and clean linen. No matter the facilities' current protocol, the addition of ozone in, for example, the laundering process can decrease the risks. In addition, ozone treatment can provide superior cleaning results while reducing operational costs. When dealing with something as delicate as a healthcare facility, ozone treatments are among the best and most effective germ removal methods. This is because ozone is a powerful oxidizer that helps kill microorganisms before converting them into oxygen, all within a very short period of time.
Why ozone? Ozone is a natural oxidizer and sanitizer, and it is created in nature when oxygen molecules are subjected to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun or an electric charge from lightning. Ozone is a gas. Gases can penetrate any porous object, making them the perfect delivery method for air disinfection. How does ozone work? Ozone helps kill bacteria by rupturing the cell wall of the offending organism. This action helps kill the bacteria, leaving only harmless waste. Ozone is a powerful sanitizer that leaves no residue on the surface of equipment or materials. There's more. A major benefit of ozone sanitizing treatments and its use on-premises is the reduction and the eradication of microorganisms normally found on soiled linens. In hospitals, healthcare facilities, and retirement facilities, as well as in locker rooms of academic or professional athletes, certain strains of microorganisms that exist and proliferate are particularly resistant to modern medications. Numerous infections from the two currently prevalent "superbugs"— Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C. difficile, or C. diff)—have created panics in recent years. Along with the facility's current infectious control procedures, ozone treatment can greatly decrease the risks.
More recent studies have shown that hot water cannot completely disinfect items from some viruses and bacteria, such as C. difficile. Even at 167˚F (75˚C) for 15 minutes, disinfection by water is not a guarantee, whereas cold water containing ozone provided no viable trace of the C. difficile bacteria after just 2.5 minutes. No other decontamination step after the use of ozone is necessary. In fact, a no-rinse step is necessary after ozone treatment, as the ozone will leave no residue on the surface.
